![]() ![]() Programs that try to format disk tracks while writing, however, won't wait for the disk to be in any particular position before writing data, and thus would not offer the Floppy Emu any means of telling them to wait while it updates data in the SD card.įor a floppy emulator to work efficiently with arbitrary disk data, it would need to have enough RAM to hold a whole disk's worth of raw bits. Thus, it won't matter if it monitors what the Apple is doing while it is accessing the SD card. So I'm not sure if it will help or not.įrom what I understand, the Floppy Emu relies upon the fact that when writing a sector to an already-formatted disk, the Apple will wait until it sees a sector header before it tries to perform the write. But he's also discovered a few other things since. He initially thought knowing more about the protections may help fix it. He's not sure why some of the Sierra games are being so stubborn. But it also regressed a couple and did nothing to help the Sierra games. The FE author was able to improve his WOZ support on a beta firmware, and many images that didn't boot now do. All the images were from the WOZ-a-day collection on the archive. Not sure if it's the same issue and gracefully failing as opposed to the other games just sort of dying. Whinnie the Pooh stops suddenly while loading and tells you something is wrong with the disk or drive. KQ2, KQ4, PQ, SQ, and MH:NY all get past that screen. All of them get to a please wait screen and eventually the FE just goes idle. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.Īs for the WOZ games the Floppy Emu is having issues with, its KQ1, KQ3, LSL, and SQ2. But on my disk it also finds an anti tamper track at T01,S0F that it patches. Passport finds the same EA protection crack. I compared the log of mine to the one with the 4am version. But after the EA logo shows, you just get a question mark in the corner of the screen. Did you by chance have time to look at the E7 games as well? I also have another disk (Earth Orbit Stations) that Passport should handle. He's not sure what is going on, but said if someone explained what protections the Sierra games use, he might be able to fix the firmware. KQ 1 and 3 exhibit the behavior, but KQ 2 and 4 seem fine. There is something going on with maybe half the Sierra WOZ images where they get to a "please wait." message, then everything just stops. On the topic of Sierra games, I've been working with the creator of the FloppyEmu, running tests on WOZ images for him to improve the support. The original disk boots to the joystick calibration screen, and never prompts to press return. Pressing return makes the disk spin up again briefly, then it just stops. It looks like it's trying to say press return. Shortly after booting it spits out a line and half of random characters, some flashing. I did just try copying Black Cauldron on to a real floppy with Passport. I really appreciate everything you guys are doing to preserve this stuff. Thanks for the info and looking into the E7 stuff. The resulting copies don't boot, or boot but act up when they start to get in game. For both of them passport says it copies but found no protection. I also have a couple that I think passport doesn't know how to crack. And I've also tried at least 2-3 different drives in some of them. But I cleaned the read surfaces off with 99% ipa and a microfiber cloth before trying to image them. I also have black cauldron that boots fine, but when I ran it through passport which said it was successfully cracked and copied, the resulting image just winds up with a screen full of garbage shortly after booting.Īdmittedly, some of these disks did have some mold/mildew on them. Some of the E7 games that supposedly copied/cracked successfully were ikari warriors, commando, impossible mission 2, and karate champ. ![]() Wasn't sure how else to get a hold of him. Not sure if he got it, but he never replied either. I tried messaging 4am via Twitter about that maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago. But they didn't work on the FE or a real disk. I also had several different disks that used the E7 (?) protection that that passport said it copied/cracked successfully. This was like 2 months ago I was trying to image my originals. Like Conan, Dig Dug, and a few others I think. Most of the floppies I had that didn't work with passport I believe told me it used a non standard RWTS or wasn't a 13 or 16 sector disk (something like that). ![]()
